What is hair loss?

Hair loss is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and it can have a significant impact on a person’s self-esteem and confidence. This is due to various reasons such as hereditary, hormonal changes, medical conditions or a normal part of aging.

Do everyone experience this?

As all our hair follicles are formed during fetal growth, it is inevitable that we will notice hair thinning of some kind in later life.

Hair loss occurs in:

  • Males and females
  • Children and adults
  • People with any colour or type of hair.

It can be an isolated problem or associated with another disease or condition. It can be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause.

Signs and symptoms of hair loss may include:

Gradual thinning on top of head

Gradual thinning on top of head. This is the most common type of hair loss, affecting people as they age. In men, hair often begins to recede at the hairline on the forehead. Women typically have a broadening of the part in their hair

Circular or patchy bald spots

Some people lose hair in circular or patchy bald spots on the scalp, beard or eyebrows. Your skin may become itchy or painful before the hair falls out

Sudden loosening of hair

A physical or emotional shock can cause hair to loosen. Handful of hair may come out when combing or washing your hair or even after gentle tugging. This type of hair loss usually causes overall hair thinning but is temporary

Full-body hair loss

Some conditions and medical treatments, such as chemotherapy for cancer, can result in the loss of hair all over your body. The hair usually grows back

Scalp patching/Scaling

This is a sign of ringworm. It may be accompanied by broken hair, redness, swelling and, at times, oozing

How do dermatologists find out what’s causing hair loss?

To pinpoint the cause, a dermatologist begins by gathering information. Your dermatologist will:

Ask questions

It’s important to know how long you’ve had hair loss and whether it came on quickly or over a period of time. Our Consultant Dermatologist would ask time sensitive questions about your scalp condition.

Look closely at your scalp, nails, any other area with hair loss

Our Dermatologist would observe different parts of your external body to determine if there are any other areas that are currently experiencing hair loss.

Test the health of your hair and its roots

Our Dermatologist will conduct a simple action by requesting you to gently pull back your hair as it tells whether your hair are prone to breaking as well as signs of new hair growing within the same area.

If your dermatologist suspects that the cause of your loss of hair could be a sign of health diseases, vitamin deficiency, hormone imbalance, or infection, you may need a blood test or scalp biopsy.  Once your dermatologist has this information, it’s often possible to tell you what’s causing your hair loss.

What is the treatment for hair loss?

Treatment depends on the diagnosis.

  • Infections should be treated.
  • Deficiencies should be remedied.
  • Causative drugs may be discontinued.
  • Inflammation can be suppressed.
  • Treatment may be available for specific conditions.
