Mammogram

Mammography is the most common screening test for breast cancer and able to detect microcalcifications, which are tiny dots of calcification seen in early breast cancer.

Mammography is a safe low-dose x-ray examination of the breasts which is used to detect and diagnose breast diseases, as a preventive measure for women who have no symptoms. Mammography is less likely to detect breast cancer in women with dense breasts, as cancers and breast tissue may appear white and difficult to detect. Young women are more likely to have dense breast tissue. It is recommended for women in their early 40’s and above to have a mammogram every year.

Ultrasound

A breast ultrasound commonly used to screen for cancers and other breast abnormalities using sound waves to produce pictures of the internal structures of the breast. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, ultrasounds are considered safe for pregnant women.

Breast ultrasound can detect lumps (filled with fluid; cyst or solid) in women with dense breasts, swelling and breast pain. It can also add information to the other tests like mammograms or breast MRI. For women under the age of 30 years, ultrasound alone is sufficient to detect breast cancers and other abnormalities.
