Eating well and reasonable physical activity are important in keeping good physical health, but without an equally good mental health, a person is not going to be able to enjoy a rich, meaningful and productive life. Mental health reflects how a person can cope with the normal stresses or the ‘ups and downs’ of life. A person with good mental health would be able to work productively, fruitfully, able to contribute to the community and also have a rich and meaningful life; and all these exist in the context of stress in work, career and life in general.
When a person is no longer able to function normally or have reasonable social interaction for a substantial time, it is likely the person has a mental disorder. Mental and substance use disorders are the leading cause of disability worldwide. A person with a mental disorder is at least, or sometimes more disabling than a physically impaired person. Suicide is another huge issue in Malaysia and the world.
About 800,000 people commit suicide every year and it is the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds. Suicide is preventable and early identification and provides them medical care as soon as possible are the key to ensuring that people who have suicidal tendency receive the care they deserve. Many people with a mental disorder are not treated despite the existence of effective treatments is due to misunderstanding and stigma surrounding the mental disorder. Many people with a mental disorder also have strong perceived discrimination as well.
