3 doses of the vaccine are used to prevent four types of HPV (HPV-6, HPV-11, HPV-16, and HPV-18). It prevent 2 types of low risk and 7 types of high risk – sub-types of HPVs. The vaccine helps protect individuals ages 9 to 45 against the following diseases caused by 9 types of HPV: cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in females, anal cancer, certain head and neck cancers, and genital warts in both males and females.
However, vaccine may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. The vaccine does not prevent all types of cervical, vulvar, vaginal, anal or head and neck cancers. Vaccination does not remove the need for recommended screenings for these cancers. It is important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. The vaccine does not treat cancer or genital warts.
It is most effective when given before an individual becomes sexually active, as this is when the risk of HPV infection is highest. Gardasil-9 vaccine (HPV vaccine) has been shown to be highly effective in reducing the risk of HPV infection and the development of HPV-related cancers. Regular health check-ups are therefore recommended in addition to vaccinations.
