External Counterpulsation Therapy (ECP) is the process whereby timed compression of the blood vessels to the rhythm of your heartbeat enhances blood flow back to the heart and through out the body.
ECP is an outpatient, non-invasive treatment for heart disease that is used to relieve symptoms associated with chronic stable angina (pain in chest, shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, dizziness).
ECP therapy is designed like a passive form of exercise that boosts the blood flow throughout the body. It works like a firm massage in which three sets of inflatable pressure cuffs are wrapped around the calves, thighs and buttocks. Sequential inflation of cuffs will take place at the heartbeat. This compression is to enhance the circulation of blood flow back to the heart. Prior to the next heartbeat, all the cuffs deflate simultaneously.
Enhances blood flow throughout the body, including organs (brain, skin, kidneys and liver) which in turn increases oxygenation and flow of nutrients throughout the body.
Increases coronary blood flow, which improves oxygenation of the heart muscle
Angiogenesis forms new blood vessels as alternate pathways for blood to flow through.
Vasodilation where the blood vessels widen, hence allowing blood flow to increase.
Reduce heart workload, meaning less work is needed of the heart to pump blood.
