Description
This is a safe and non-invasive procedure that can visualize the large intestine, including the rectum.
Who should get a colonoscopy?
Regular screening, starting at the age of 40, is crucial for preventing colorectal cancer and detecting it at an early stage. Additionally, individuals experiencing symptoms associated with colorectal cancer should consider undergoing a colonoscopy.
- Rectal bleeding
- Dark-colored stools
- Blood in the stool
- Persistent diarrhea or constipation
- Narrow stools
- Abdominal cramps or pain
- Unintended weight loss
Note:
- Prior to a colonoscopy, it is important to properly prepare by emptying your colon. Any remaining residue in the colon can hinder a clear view of the colon and rectum during the examination. To ensure effective preparation, your doctor may instruct you to:
- Fast minimum 6 hours prior to the procedure.
- Follow a special diet on the day before the exam.
- Take a laxative to facilitate bowel movements and empty the colon.
- Colonoscopy is typically a day-care procedure, meaning you will not need to be admitted overnight.
- After the procedure, it is important to have someone available to drive you home as driving under the influence of sedation is not recommended.
- You will receive a comprehensive report of the colonoscopy, along with a video (CD) of the procedure.
