Pneumococcal disease is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, leading to severe infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. In Malaysia, pneumonia has been a significant health concern, ranking as the first leading cause of death in 2023, accounting for 15.2% of medically certified deaths.

Symptoms

The manifestations of pneumococcal disease vary depending on the affected area:

  • Pneumonia: Fever, chills, cough, rapid or difficulty breathing, and chest pain.
  • Meningitis: Stiff neck, fever, headache, sensitivity to light, and confusion.
  • Bacteremia (bloodstream infection): Fever, chills, and low alertness.

Early recognition and treatment are crucial to prevent severe complications.

Risks

Without prompt and appropriate treatment, pneumococcal infections can lead to:

  • Severe health complications: Such as brain damage from meningitis or lung abscesses from pneumonia.
  • Hospitalization: Extended medical care may be required.
  • Death: Particularly in high-risk groups.

Certain populations are more susceptible to pneumococcal disease:

  • Children under 5 years: Immature immune systems make young children more vulnerable.
  • Adults 50 years and older: The immune system weakens with age, increasing susceptibility.
  • Individuals with chronic illnesses: Conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or chronic lung diseases elevate the risk.
  • Those with weakened immune systems: Including individuals with HIV/AIDS or those undergoing chemotherapy.
  • Smokers: Tobacco use damages respiratory defenses, facilitating infection.

Preventative measures include:

  • Vaccination: The most effective method to prevent pneumococcal disease.
  • Good hygiene practices: Regular handwashing and covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Healthy lifestyle choices: Balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest to strengthen the immune system.
  • Avoiding smoking: To reduce respiratory tract vulnerability.

Pneumovax 23 is a pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) that helps protect against 23 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, reducing the risk of pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. Recommended for adults 50+, high-risk individuals, and those with chronic conditions, it boosts immunity and prevents severe complications.
